The process of painting, cutting, reassembling and cutting again is repeated numerous times to create these images. This process generates endless new compositions and a re-imagining of the initial image.
Considering the rhythms between the new shapes and lines and the relationships between the new combinations of colours and surfaces, is an immersive and childlike process.
These paintings are concerned with the contrast between the painterly qualities of the surface and the sculptural reassembled forms.
The paintings; ‘Little Yellow Staircase 1 - 3’ embrace the motif of staircases echoed in the concrete sculpture installation; ‘Labyrinth’. This takes on a different attitude to the sculptures with a more playful use of colour and line. The wonky lines are created through free hand cutting on a band saw and cast off any preoccupation with geometric precision.
